YOUTH MINISTER JOB DESCRIPTION
PRINCIPAL FUNCTION:
The Youth Minister leads the church’s efforts to come alongside families in developing
students in grades 7-12 into disciples of Jesus Christ.
SECONDARY FUNCTION:
Work with the pastor and other staff to plan and implement the ministry of the church.
Duties:
1. Oversee weekly Bible studies and activities, including Sunday School and a
Wednesday evening program.
2. Direct and plan other Youth Ministry events with help and input from the Youth
Committee. Events should be planned at least three months in advance and should
strive for a balance in fun, relationship building, training, service, outreach, and
worship. Major events may include youth camp, mission trips, Disciple Now
Weekends, retreats, etc.
3. Build personal relationships with youth and provide pastoral care.
4. Regularly communicate, build relationships, and provide resources for parents.
5. Meet with the Youth Committee at least once per quarter to plan, schedule,
promote, and evaluate all aspects of the Youth Ministry.
6. Recruit volunteers to help in the events and programs of the Youth Ministry. At
least two adults should be present at all youth activities.
7. Train and develop Youth Ministry volunteers, ensuring they understand and follow
the ministry guidelines adopted by the church.
8. Ensure that all Youth Ministry volunteers have completed and passed a criminal
background check within the last three years.
9. Ensure that emergency medical/liability release forms as well as parent/ guardian
permission forms for all minors are signed by parent/guardian and on file in the
church office prior to leaving church premises.
10. Oversee and provide recommendations regarding the Youth Ministry budget.
11. Prepare and present Youth Ministry highlights at the quarterly Church Business
Meetings.
12. Attend weekly staff meetings and assist the pastor and staff with the overall
ministry of the church.
Relationships:
1. The Youth Minister is under the direct supervision of the pastor, who consults with
the Personnel Committee on significant staff issues.
2. The Youth Minister selects and confers with the Youth Committee.
3. The Youth Minister recruits and oversees the Youth Ministry volunteers.
Expectations:
1. Work hours will be 10-15 hours per week, with obvious exceptions on weeks of
major events (mission trips, retreats, etc.). This includes weekly staff meetings,
Sunday mornings (approximately 9:00 am – 12:00 pm), and Wednesday evenings
(approximately 5:45-7:30 pm during the school year)
2. There will not be set office hours except for staff meetings.
3. Be actively involved in the life of the church.
Qualifications:
1. Experience working with teenagers.
2. Good communication skills with church staff, members of the congregation, and
parents who may not attend the church.
3. Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
4. An appreciation and practice of high ethical standards, including church policies.
5. Desires to grow and develop as a Youth Minister. Takes initiative to learn strategies,
research teaching resources, and learn from others.
6. Some college-level education. College graduate preferred.
